The Methodology

Not a new invention.
A return.

For 40,000 years the human brain evolved to think visually, spatially, and narratively. The San people of Southern Africa demonstrated this long before the first management consultant entered a boardroom.

Neuro Narrative Mapping does not introduce a new way of thinking. It removes the obstacles that were preventing you from thinking the way you were always wired to think.

Why It Works

The science is settled.
The practice is not.

The Drawing Effect

Drawing items dramatically improves free recall compared to writing — with effect sizes that rival every other known memory technique. When participants draw their problem, they own it. When they write it, they record it. There is a difference.

Wammes, Meade & Fernandes, 2016 — Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology

Dual Coding

Pictures are encoded in both verbal and image memory systems. Words are encoded only verbally. Visual + verbal simultaneously is the optimal learning modality — which is precisely what NNM produces in every session.

Conceptual Metaphor

Abstract thinking is grounded in physical and spatial experience — not language. This means spatial, visual methods like NNM's mapping align with the brain's natural architecture for understanding complexity.

Lakoff & Johnson, 1980 — cited by 100,000+ academic sources

The Methodology
Neuro Narrative Mapping

From problem fog
to clarity. In one session.

01
Explore
Sky landscape — hot air balloons, storm clouds, mountains
Explore the real problem
Most sessions solve the wrong problem brilliantly. NNM's Exploration phase uses a structured 8-step Problem Statement Canvas to map the actual landscape — stakeholders, context, emotional impact, root cause, current workarounds, and the true cost of inaction — before anyone suggests a solution.
The output is not a list. It is a problem statement so precise that every person in the room agrees it is real.
What you use: 30 cards. Problem Statement Canvas. Vision cards. Wild cards for when the group gets stuck.
02
Mine
Cave landscape — gems, mining tools, underground tunnels
Mine for real solutions
Not brainstorming. Not ideation. Systematic Inventive Thinking — adapted for visual methodology — forces participants to generate solutions they would never have reached through open discussion.
Five structured thinking operators. Each applied to the visual symbols from the Exploration phase. Each producing solutions that are constraint-based, specific, and testable.
The output is a hypothesis: if we implement this, then this will change. We will know it worked when we see this.
What you use: 25 cards. Five SIT operators. Idea filtering framework.
03
Distribute
Garden landscape — seeds, paths, trees, harvest
Close the execution chasm
This is where every other methodology fails. The insight was real. The energy was there. Then nothing happened.
NNM's Distribution phase uses a hybrid of Prof. VG Govindarajan's Three-Box Solution and Goal Mapping to ensure the solution does not die in the room. Box 1: what do we do now? Box 2: what must we unlearn? Box 3: what does the future version look like?
Each participant leaves with a visual commitment — drawn, witnessed, and dated. The execution chasm closes before the session ends.
What you use: Distribution deck. Visual Metaphoric Roadmap. Commitment cards.

The third point
of the triangle.

NNM is not a two-role methodology. The Graphic Recorder is not a note-taker, a scribe, or a decoration. The GR is the third structural role — the one that holds the group's collective intelligence in real time, surfaces connections participants have not yet seen, and produces the visual artefact that defeats the forgetting curve.

Without a GR, NNM is a facilitation session. With one, it becomes a visual intelligence system.

Formats

From 90 minutes
to five days.

Nano NNM — 90 minutes

Introduction to NNM. Quick problem framing. Team check-ins. Perfect for organisations discovering what visual thinking can do.

Half-day — 3-4 hours

Exploration + initial Mining. Problem mapped, solutions generated. No Distribution phase — best for teams with an existing implementation structure.

Full day — 6-8 hours

The complete methodology. Problem to hypothesis to commitment. Best for organisational challenges that have resisted every other approach.

Multi-day — 2-5 days

Complex systemic challenges. Strategic planning. Culture change. Academic programmes. The full depth of NNM across multiple sessions with the same group.
